So today is Blue Monday – officially the most depressing day of the year.
It’s only natural to feel a bit down in January. We’ve gone back to work, all the Christmas festivities are over, we feel sluggish and tired, the purse strings have been tightened and the weather is dull and dark.
While we know that Blue Monday isn’t based on any real science, we do know that generally Mondays tend to be the hardest day of the week for people to drag themselves out of bed. Whether it’s what lies ahead for the working week, a barrage of emails sat waiting for us, too many late nights or over-indulgence of food and alcohol; it seems many of us suffer from Monday Blues.
Here’s our top tips for surviving Blue Monday:
Take a duvet day. If having a duvet day is a rarity, then take this chance to bury your head under the covers and indulge in some relaxation time.
Be outside. Even if it’s cold, bundle up and go for a walk. Movement causes your body to release endorphins, which make you feel happier, plus daylight helps to boost your mood.
Plan something nice for dinner. You don’t have to spend money eating out. Pick something that you love to eat or would only have for special occasions and enjoy!
Watch a good film. One that is heart-warming or makes you laugh out loud. Laughter is one of the best medicines.
Put some music on. Nothing beats your favourite song to put you in a good mood!
Take time out. Whether that’s having a cuppa, putting your feet up, chatting with family or friends or relaxing in a bubble bath with your favourite book, then just do it.
