At The Sleep Council we always want you to be safe in the sun so here’s our top tips on beating the heat:
- Stay hydrated – in this weather you need to keep up the fluid intake. Drink plenty of water – more than normal and try to avoid alcohol. Alcohol speeds up water loss through urine and when you’re sweating this quickly leads to dehydration. Dehydration can cause headaches and body aches that can make getting to sleep difficult.
- Keep protected – slap on the sun cream and keep out of the midday sun. Don’t forget about your eyes either. They can also get sunburnt so wear sunglasses with a CE mark.
- Keep a cool bedroom – your body temperature needs to drop slightly before you go to sleep which is why you just can’t sleep when you’re too hot. Keep windows open, blinds/curtains shut to keep the light out and turn an electric fan on. For more tips see previous blog post here.
- Keep it loose – wear lightweight, light coloured loose clothing to keep you cool. Dark, tight fabrics inhibit sweat evaporation.
