When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, some of us swear by a hot milky drink while others wouldn’t dream of slipping between the sheets without silky pyjamas on.
But the number one sleep tip that topped our online poll “Which one of the sleep tips could you not live without?” was…. [drum roll]… a comfortable bed.
More than a third of you cited that it was the bed that contributed to getting plenty of zzzs. And we couldn’t agree more. A bed is often overlooked yet it’s difficult to get deep, restful sleep on an old, uncomfortable one. A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching.
Blackout blinds and/or curtains were the second most popular sleep tip. Light is a common sleep stealer so investing in a good pair of well-lined curtains or a blackout blind, which keep the light out and the room dark, can be really helpful. We need darkness to increase the production of melatonin – the hormone we need to feel sleepy.
Reading a book and switching off gadgets were closely followed at 12% and 9% of the vote. Reading is a calming exercise to do before bed, especially when you’ve switched off those gadgets! Limiting screen time at least an hour before bed time is beneficial. Use of electronic devices (and that includes the TV) can affect the time it takes you nod off but can also inadvertently wake you in the night.
Interestingly, a soak in the bath and using lavender based cream/spray/oils came bottom of the poll suggesting that while these are a nice-to-do, they didn’t have a large impact on sleep quality – or perhaps folk just don’t have the time!
