***GIVEAWAY HAS NOW CLOSED***
We’re heading into the final week of our Sleeptember campaign and it’s been a good one – thanks to all of you who have been supporting us.
To celebrate we’re giving five lucky people the chance win a set of books, The Secret World of Sleep, new thriller The Sleep Room and Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer. Our thanks to book publishers Palgrave Macmillan and Pan Macmillan for these fantastic prizes!
As it’s Sleeptember and we’re promoting the healthy benefits of sleep, we’re challenging you to put down ALL gadgets before bed – from notepads, gaming machines, TV’s and most importantly mobile phones – and instead set aside an hour or so before bed to read.
We’re a nation of techies but unfortunately with this comes the inability to ‘switch off’ before bed. A reported 95% of us spend our final hour in bed checking social media, emails, playing games on our mobile, yet it’s these things that stop us falling asleep. Exposure to even the weakest glow at night – for example, the notification light flashing on your mobile next to your bed – can unconsciously play havoc with your body’s circadian rhythms, keeping you alert when you should be sleepy.
Winding down before bed is extremely important when it comes to getting a good quality night’s sleep and we’re strong advocators of reading before bed to help relax mind and body.
The competition closes at 1pm on Friday 27th September. Winners will be announced on The Sleep Council’s Twitter and Facebook pages by 3pm. To enter you must follow AND retweet on Twitter OR like AND share on Facebook.
Here’s some more information on the books:
The Secret World of Sleep: Neuroscientist Penny Lewis explores the latest research into the night time brain to understand the real benefits of sleep. While our body rests, the brain practices tasks it learned during the day. By understanding the role that the nocturnal brain plays in our waking life, we can boost creativity and become smarter.
The Sleep Room: When promising psychiatrist, James Richardson, is offered the job opportunity of a lifetime, he is thrilled. One of his tasks is to manage a controversial project – a pioneering therapy in which extremely disturbed patients are kept asleep for months. As Richardson settles into his new life, he begins to sense something uncanny about the six sleeping patients. Why is the trainee nurse so on edge when she spends nights alone with them? And what can it mean when all the sleepers start dreaming at the same time? It’s not long before Richardson finds himself questioning everything he knows about the human mind as he attempts to uncover the shocking secrets of The Sleep Room.
Only Time Will Tell: The number one bestselling first book in The Clifton Chronicles, a multi-generational family saga which tells the epic story of Harry Clifton’s life beginning in 1919, in the backstreets of Bristol. Only Time Will Tell takes a cast of memorable characters from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take his place at Oxford, or join the fight against Hitler’s Germany.
