With research suggesting that around 30% of people aged 30 and above are snorers, and one in three couples report disharmony in their relationship because of sleepless nights, it’s fair to say snoring can have a huge impact – especially on sleep.

It can affect anyone at any time in their lives but it’s not just an annoying habit. It can be damaging to your health and a symptom of a more serious sleep disorder.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where a person can stop breathing in their sleep hundreds of times a night. And it’s estimated that OSA occurs in as much as 20-40% of the adult population that are snorers.

Marking the start of National Stop Snoring Week – a campaign that hopes to raise awareness of the problems snoring can bring – we’ve teamed up with Snoreeze to offer some advice and tips.

Why do we snore?
When we sleep, our airway narrows. But if our airway narrows too much, fast-travelling air is pulled through it, causing the soft tissue in the back of the throat to become dehydrated and vibrate. This sound is what most people know as snoring.

What’s causing my snoring?
There are many reasons why somebody might snore. The most common include:
• Age
• Medication
• Pregnancy
• Menopause
• Alcohol
• Smoking
• Being overweight.

How do I stop snoring?
A change in lifestyle could greatly reduce your snoring. Cutting down on alcohol and regularly exercising slashes your risk, as does quitting smoking.

There are also products specifically designed to help you stop snoring. Ask yourself the following questions:

1) Am I snoring loudly every night?
The main cause of snoring is the narrowing of the airway. This narrowing leads to the soft tissue vibrating in the back of the throat – and the unmistakable sound of snoring. 2) Am I snoring because of a blocked nose/cold?

What problems can snoring lead to?
Snoring can be symptomatic of a serious condition called obstructive sleep apnoea. Snoring is caused by the airway narrowing. But in some cases, the airway becomes so narrow that the walls of the airway stick together and close up. This usually happens for 10-30 seconds, but can occur for longer. When the airway finally opens up again, the sleeper will emit a loud, violent snore. This is known as an apnoea.
Throughout the night, the sleeper’s body will constantly wake itself up in order to breathe. Though they might not remember it, this is what causes them to feel sleepy during the day.

Aside from feeling fatigued, other symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea include:
• Dry mouth
• Gasping/choking
• Loud snoring
• Frequent awakening
• Breath-holding
• Weight gain
• Headaches
• Poor concentration
• Low mood

How do I treat sleep apnoea?
If you suspect you have sleep apnoea, visit your doctor as soon as possible. They will be able to recommend the treatment that’s right for you.

Often, a doctor will advise using a CPAP machine or an oral device to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnoea. A CPAP machine uses air pressure to force air through the breathing obstruction. This is done by wearing a mask over your face while you sleep. Many doctors recommend this treatment for people with severe sleep apnoea.

For those with mild-to-moderate sleep apnoea, another option is to use an oral device which is similar to a mouth guard you might wear during sports. The device gently holds your jaw in the right position while you sleep, opening your airway and helping you breathe easily.
